What Is Cloud Storage & How Can It Be Used?

By Muhammad Hanzla Ijaz

What is cloud storage? It’s virtual remote storage to store, manage, backup, and operate data as a service.

It lets users and organizations keep their files stored with the cloud services provider for on-demand access on their devices. Cloud services archive long-retention, less frequently used data. Like, For large-size audit reports, projects, and documents records. It provides users the elasticity, scalability, multi-tenancy, and metered resources. Unlike going for the traditional way used by organizations of adding up physical storage devices to store data which is rather expensive.

It functions by allowing a user’s computer, smartphone, or any device to send and receive files from a data server. Clients can access the data from the same data server. Even if unfortunately, a server goes down or losses data. For example, Photographers save their photos and videos on both their computers and the cloud. Cloud keeps a data backup in case of theft or storage card issues.

Types of Cloud Storage:

These are a few types of clouds, public, private, and hybrid.

Public Cloud Storage

Also known as utility/online storage service. Such types of storage are available by a third party as a service. It exists on a remote cloud server and it is accessible from anywhere through the internet. Public cloud services use a subscription-based billing system as it is based on a multi-tenant storage environment. A customer pays according to the storage capacity under use.

Examples of personal cloud services are Amazon Web Services (AWS)Google Cloud, Apple iCloud, and Microsoft Azure.

Private Cloud Storage

It uses a storage pattern that stores an organization’s data using on-premises storage servers. The organization controls private cloud storage. Just like public cloud private cloud storage provides you with the scalability, usability, and flexibility of storage architecture. Private cloud storage is good for organizations. That is concerned about security and prefer managing their own cloud storage. Example, HP Data Centers, Microsoft, Elastra-private cloud, and Ubuntu.

Hybrid Cloud Storage

It’s a combination of both public and on-premises cloud storage. It uses the combined resources and capabilities of both cloud storage services. Third parties manage hybrid cloud storage. Hybrid cloud storage combines both capabilities that can help benefit a business of any scale by including elasticity, scalability, and cost savings.

Hybrid file storage can benefit a company that is operating in multiple locations or its employees are working remotely. Just like we witness during Covid-19 that caused many people to suddenly work from home. But services like hybrid cloud storage helped businesses to continue their work. By providing access to data from anywhere they want.

So how does it works?

Well, cloud storage manages the information stored in the large data center located in multiple locations around the globe. A third party maintains its data and is available on hosted servers. A vast number of data servers ensure their availability. So, if one server goes down or needs maintenance, the user can access the replicated data elsewhere.

On the other hand, the public cloud replicate is available in multiple locations in physical form for facing any errors and disaster recovery purposes. The primary or local location is likely to be closer physically to the company’s facility. The data can be accessed faster and at a lower cost, rather than choosing a primary location elsewhere.

Many companies are jumping into this trend of cloud storage management and extending out to the cloud. The public service provider manages the public cloud. Its infrastructure and services consist of, servers, storage, networking, and data center operations.

Cloud storage resources can be equipped by the following methods:

  • Stopping users from paying for storage on a per-transaction basis.
  • Users who use allocated storage that is prepared in advance of the service. The user pays for the services on a monthly basis or a fixed fee.
  • By the service provider that provides storage in a way, it’s needed. Payments are based on pay per use basis.

Prices can vary in accordance with the user’s usage, service provider, capacity, or the length of time required.

Advantages of using cloud storage:

Cost-efficient

Cloud storage service, lets the user pay for the storage and outsources the storage problem. Companies using this technology don’t need any external physical storage to store and manage their data. Users have to pay for this service more than a time but its cost is low that it won’t affect your budget at all. Some cloud services providers are even offering storage services for a lifetime at very reasonable rates. If any brand or organization using any tracking and monitoring service like IoT PREMIS. Can easily track and monitor not only employees’ activities but also forward data related to them straight to the cloud. Which does not only secure data but is much more cost-efficient. Rather than paying for each server to store your data.

Scalable

Cloud storage is easy to access and manage. A user can easily upgrade their service plan If they aren’t satisfied with the storage. The users are not required to physically move any data from one place to another. By going for extra features, you can add extra space to your storage.

Global availability

Cloud storage works like a hard drive on your system but it gives you an edge by its file-sharing feature. Cloud services are available almost anywhere and are accessible on any operating system. Without worrying about which operating system you are using.

Multiple access

A cloud environment can have more than one user associated with it. Multiple users can access and collaborate with a common file. For example,  A user can give access to any other user to make changes to your file. After getting authorization that person can access and modify that common file from anywhere they want.

Security

So, when it comes to the internet, there’s always a question of safety. A business big or small needs some reassurance before investing in any service. Especially when it comes to storing data related to a business.

A company makes sure the cloud service they are acquiring is safe. Cloud  services just don’t save your data on a single server and data center. But instead, it uses multiple data centers and replicates data. So that if one data center goes down or needs maintenance, you can have others to back your data up.

Conclusion

In the past couple of years, cloud services have gained quite popularity. It’s a good example of technological advancement. That has provided us with an amazing way of saving and managing data from anywhere we want. The users can easily store data safely in a digital place without any shortage of space. Users can easily upload or download data, and increase cloud space by paying a monthly fee. It’s safe and secure other users can also access your files by your authorization. Most big brands and companies are investing in the cloud industry. Because it has the potential to change the structure of storage and communication.
